SEO and GEO share most of their groundwork, but they aim at different results. Here is how a local business should think about both.

The short answer
SEO is the work of ranking your pages in Google's list of results. GEO is the work of getting your business named, and described correctly, inside answers from AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews. For a local business they share most of the groundwork, but they measure success differently and stress different details.

What does each one actually aim for?
Classic SEO aims for a position. You want your service page in the top results for "water heater repair Torrance" and your Google Business Profile in the map pack. Success is a ranking, a click and then a call.
GEO aims for a mention. Someone asks an assistant "who fixes tankless water heaters near Torrance?" and the assistant writes a short answer naming a few businesses. Success is being one of those names, with the right details attached, and ideally a link to your site as a cited source.
The difference matters because fewer people click through when an AI answer appears. Pew Research Center found in July 2025 that people clicked a regular result in 8% of searches with an AI summary, versus 15% without one. Ranking still helps. But the answer itself is now part of the shop window.
Where do SEO and GEO overlap?
More than most people expect. Both reward:
- Fast, crawlable pages. If a crawler cannot read your text, neither Google nor an assistant can use it.
- One clear page per service. "Drain cleaning in Long Beach" on its own page beats a single page listing twenty services.
- A complete Google Business Profile. Categories, hours, services and photos feed both the map pack and AI answers. See our guide to Google Business Profile categories.
- Reviews. Customers read them and so do assistants.
- Structured data. Schema markup helps search engines read your business details without guessing.
If you do the SEO basics well, you have done a good share of GEO already. That is the honest starting point.
Where do they differ?
The differences are in emphasis, not in kind.
Consistency counts more in GEO. A search engine can rank a page even if your hours differ between your site and Yelp. An assistant that reads both has to pick one, and it may pick wrong. GEO treats every mismatch as a bug.
Plain statements count more in GEO. SEO copy often chases keywords. GEO copy needs sentences an assistant can lift and repeat: "We repair and replace residential water heaters in Torrance, Gardena and Redondo Beach. Same-day service on weekdays."
Outside sources count more in GEO. Assistants tend to summarize what several sources agree on. Directory listings, local news, trade associations and review sites all act as confirmation. SEO values these as links. GEO values them as corroboration of facts.
Measurement is different. SEO has rankings and Search Console clicks. GEO has no official dashboard. You check it by asking the questions customers ask and reading the answers. We explain that process in how ChatGPT picks local businesses to recommend.
What does this look like for a real trade business?
Picture a two-truck HVAC company covering six cities.
The SEO side of the plan looks familiar: a fast site, a page for AC repair, furnace repair, heat pumps and maintenance plans, a page for each of the six cities, a tuned Google Business Profile, and a steady flow of reviews.
The GEO side adds a few things on top:
- A business facts page that states the name, license number, service area, hours and services in plain text.
- A sweep of the main directories so hours, phone and service area match the site word for word.
- FAQ sections on service pages that answer the real questions: "Do you service Mitsubishi mini-splits?" "Do you charge for estimates?"
- Schema on every page that validates, following a contractor schema checklist.
- A monthly check of what ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI answers say about the company, with any wrong facts fixed at the source.
Most of the GEO list is maintenance, not invention. It turns a site that ranks into a business that is described correctly wherever it shows up.
How should a local business split its effort?
There is no fixed ratio, and anyone who quotes one is guessing. A practical order of work:
- Fix the foundation. Site speed, one page per service, a complete profile, matching name, address and phone everywhere.
- Fill the content gaps. Service and city pages that answer real questions in plain language.
- Add the GEO layer. Facts page, schema, directory cleanup, FAQ sections.
- Check both results. Rankings and calls for SEO. AI answers and citations for GEO.
- Repeat monthly. Fix what drifted, add what is missing.
If budget is tight, steps one and two do the most for both channels. Step three is where GEO starts to stand apart.
Is GEO just SEO with a new name?
Partly, and it is fair to be skeptical of new acronyms. The technical base is the same. But the target is different enough to change how you work. An SEO report that shows rankings going up can miss the fact that ChatGPT lists your old phone number. A GEO check catches that.
Google itself is moving toward answers. Alphabet reported in Q2 2026 that more than a billion people use AI Mode every month. So the line between "Google SEO" and "AI search" is getting thinner every quarter. Treating them as one plan with two scorecards is the simplest way to stay ready.
What should you do this week?
Search your main service and city on Google. Then ask ChatGPT and Gemini the same question in plain words. Compare the two. If you rank but are missing from the AI answer, or the answer has your details wrong, that gap is your GEO work.
Our free AI visibility check runs that comparison for you with live web search on and shows the full answers. If you want help with the ongoing work, see how we handle search (SEO) and AI search (GEO) together.
Frequently asked questions
- Should a local business do SEO or GEO first?
Usually SEO basics first, because they help both. A fast site, a page per service, and a complete Google Business Profile are the foundation AI answers draw on too. Add GEO checks once that base is in place.
- Will GEO hurt my Google rankings?
No. The work that helps AI assistants, like consistent facts, clear pages and valid schema, is also good practice for Google. There is no tradeoff between the two when the work is done honestly.
- Do I need two different agencies for SEO and GEO?
Not necessarily. The two share most of the same groundwork, so one team that understands both can avoid duplicate effort. What matters is that someone actually checks AI answers, not just rankings.
- How do I measure GEO if there is no ranking report?
Ask the questions your customers ask in the main assistants on a schedule, and record whether you are named, what is said, and which sources are cited. Track calls and forms from search as well.
